Violence in Guwahati

Clashes between police and protesters in Guwahati (Assam) were widely reported yesterday.  Two people were killed in the violence, which was sparked by protests against the eviction of squatters in and around the city.

Factors leading to improved situation in Assam

Bibhu Prasad Routray has published an article reflecting on the downturn in violence in Assam in 2010-11.  He argues that cooperation with neighbouring states and attacking insurgent groups' leaders has been instrumental in the improved situation.  He downplays the importance of peace talks (which have been getting much press over recent months) and security force operations.

Development the key: Tripura police chief

K. Saleem Ali, Tripura's police chief, stated in a recent interview that economic development, together with a crackdown on northeast Indian rebels in Bangladesh, led to the cessation of conflict in that state.

Extortion persists in northeast

Oil India Limited (OIL) has reportedly been the victim of extortion attempts by the NSCN(IM), according to a recent article in Tehelka.

The Telegraph also reports of a rise in incidences of extortion by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

New militant groups in Assam?

The Assam Tribune reports on the emergence of new militant outfits in Assam, including the Adivashi People's Army, which reportedly attempted to bomb a train a couple of days ago.

ULFA militants injured

Two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) members were injured in a clash with a joint army and police team in Assam today, according to Outlook India.
